Sea Captain Cluver
Sea Captain Cluver
Henry Cluver from Germany. Our ancestor
His grandson, Harold identifies on the backs and previous post below grandaughter Bernice Linn also.
I would guess if this was taken at someones home when he is this older, they did own a home on I st. Petaluma and later he lived in Oakland with daughter where he died. That home in Oakland is an area now full of Kaiser hospital.
I think for any man who could Captain those old sailing ships, the stagecoach routes over old Mt. Tamalpais, unpaved dirt, would hold no terrors . I have read harrowing accounts of the stages and wagons that drove over the old mountain roads and the accounts of the hairpin turns out on nothing. & that's not driving the vehicles we take for granted now, it was handling teams of 2-4-6 or more animals. I would be scared the whole way and gotten out and walked, as I have done even now in places.
Best Wishes Katie

Grandpa was friends with Pete Drees, Petaluma. Pete's family had the Drees florists for years. Pete was a great hunter & traveled the world. He had a place up at Petrolia, near Freestone on the Mattole River. Had cabins there and a museum of his trophys. Pete gave over one of the cabin homes for Grandpa & Grandma to live in whenever they wanted. They loved it up there & went as much as they could.

Grandma was a real picture nut. She took pictures of everything. I still have 2 box camera she used and they still work. Not sure where I could get film for them now or even develop it . Must be websites. I used them years ago and they worked really well. The negatives are about 3 x 5. Fun to use

Catharina Margarethe Cluver
My Grandfather Harold Cluver's own Grandmother. Born in Germany & sailed to USA with husband & ship captain, Henry or Heinrich Cluver. The back in Harold handwriting says 'my Grandma Cluver"
Henrys occupation on Cath's info says "kaufman" otherwise a merchant. Several years ago I wandered about San Francisco and found the sidewalk area where his store was. Located down near the wharves and piers. A huge skyscraper now on the location.
After San Francisco they moved to Bolinas.
Yes, Cath & Henry were cousins. Not uncommon, & our Evans family back in Ireland had cousin marriages.

Harold Henry Cluver
Born 21, May 1894
All the below photos are Harold Henry Cluver.
My Grandfather.
I have 2 of these
I always heard it said that these were taken on his wedding day. I have no other wedding photos of Harold & Alma.
They were married 22 June, 1917 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Petaluma. They actually sort of eloped with the help of her brothers & sisters. Somewhere I have the Argus Newspaper article and I will post it with it turns up.
Harold was born in Petaluma. Mother Alice Hinkston Cluver and Father Henry Augustus Cluver. Their only child was Harold.

There is a book, the Cluverii Chronica. It has a great deal about the Cluver in Germany. It has information about many lines and over into the United States. My own particular Cluver line is not in it. But it has been many years since I looked at it and may have overlooked something. These images are of various Cluver shields of Heraldry. Altho each is different, there are common images in all. If you cannot find this book to read, try the website WorldCat.org to find a close copy. I have personally using my own local library's inter-library loan system, borrowed many books I wanted to use from across the USA. I highly recommend it and it's easy to use. Speak to the librarians at the reference desk in yours.
I used to have a great photo work app. that I used to clean up the images. I don't recall what it was but I'm searching for it again.
As far as I know, nothing exists in my Cluver items that has any Heraldry images. Tho there is a great story of an old castle and old items. There was an enormous soup spoon about as long as my arm, & the bowl of it the size of my hand, I recall seeing as a kid but I have no idea where it is now. There was an image on it but I don't recall what.
Well Happy Trails, Katie

Starting this I realize I have a ton of items that will need scanning into my laptop. So will begin with what I have already at hand, while I work to copy more.
My Grandparents Harold & Alma Cluver lived in northern California many years. About Fortuna and Rohner Ville. Mom was born at Fortuna September 1921. Grandpa worked in the big trees, Redwoods. How we all grew up with that in our blood.
Cluvers, Roy - Douglas - Mom 'sisher' & Marjorie. Marjorie dies very young
My dear Granny, Alice Hinkston Cluver & my mother
Rose & Roy Cluver @ WWII
Back down on the Ranch at Petaluma. 4th of July celebrators
And all these at end at the Ranch in Petaluma
3291 I Street Extension. In those old years, no-one else lived on the Extension but our family, Cluvers & Bostroms.
